Floor Update: Crucifix In Production
The crucifix will be part of the beauty of the new space. This liturgical art is coming from the studio of Timothy P. Schmalz in Canada, who is pleased to be creating this custom piece for Holy Spirit.
Schmalz is a world renowned sculptor who has pieces in Rome commissioned by Pope Francis, including “Angles Unaware”, the only piece of permanent sculpture to be added to St. Peter’s Square since the time of Bernini, over 400 years ago. A replica of “Angles Unaware” is in the Holy Spirit office, a gift from Fr. Jim Callahan when he spoke at Holy Spirit in January 2021.
In describing his work, Timothy Schmalz says, “I am devoted to creating artwork that glorifies Christ. The reason for this devotion, apart from my Christian beliefs, is that an artist needs an epic subject to create epic art. I describe my sculptures as being visual prayers
The compassionate face of Christ in this corpus was one of the reasons it was chosen for Holy Spirit, especially since so many children will view this both in our parish and the school. A body that is racially neutral was also an important factor to speak to our parish value of being welcoming to all.
The process of creating the cast bronze corpus of Christ takes months. The studio has sent a video to share with Holy Spirit Parish to gain insight into the artist and the cast bronze process—see video above. The corpus is scheduled to be shipped from the studio in Canada late in 2023.
Flooring Project: Adjustments
Many of you heard at the information sessions in November that the current layout was chosen by the parish in the feedback interviews. But there are a significant number of people that preferred the original layout so we worked with the architect to come up with adjustments that attempt to capture more of the intimacy of being in-the-round. The changes that you see in the layout are the result of those adjustments. So, try out one of the chairs on the sides if you want a more intimate feel.
