The Sacred Heart Haiti Mission (SHHM) was started in Rochester in 1980 by Dale & Joyce Grabarkiewicz. They initially visited Haiti on a mission trip with Fr. Fieten from St. Pius X in Rochester, MN. Father Fieten needed volunteers to build a clinic and a school in Port au Prince, so a group from St. Pius went to Haiti. Most of those who went on that first trip are still involved with the SHHM today!
The SHHM works closely with Mother Teresa’s Sisters, the Missionaries of Charity. Father Fieten was the Treasurer for Mother Teresa’s Sisters for the entire United States. The Sister Superior over Haiti kept in contact with Joyce and put her in charge of the newly built volunteer house. The volunteer house was built with donations that came in after Dale & Joyce’s first visit. The volunteer house is open to all who would like to witness the work of Mother Teresa.
The picture above was taken in November (2017) in celebration of Dale & Joyce's 60th wedding Anniversary.
